Alta Badia: Corvara
Placed
in a wide and sunny plain at the very foot of the massif of the Sassongher,
at 1568 metres high on the sea level, Corvara can be defined the cradle
of Alta Badia tourism.
Already during the second half of the 18th century some local youths started
climbing the nearby mountains and leading there the first tourists - at
that time called 'forestieri' (foreigners). After the First World War,
precisely in 1938, the firs ski school was opened and the sledge-lift
of the Col Alto was built (this last was replaced in 1947 by the first
chair lift in Italy). This marked the beginning of winter tourism in the
Valley.
Top quality infrastructure, together with the professionality of tourist
operators; have turned Corvara into one o the most appreciated winter
resort of the whole Alps.
Not to be missed is the panorama from the plateau of the Pralongià:
from the Marmolada to the Austrian mountains, through the majestic peaks
of the Dolomites.
