Alta Badia Dolomites Corvara Pedraces San Cassiano, Colfosco La Villa: all you need to know Alta Badia: the Ladin tongue

Val Badia has a very peculiar trait, something, which makes the valley different from all the others. The language spoken is a very ancient one: the Ladin.
Already four centuries ago, according to chronicles dating back to that time, this tongue was spoken in the area. The following annexations of the Val Badia to Bavaria, then Austria, and finally, after the 1st World War, to Italy, have not altered in any significant way the cultural identity of the Ladins, which has grown stronger with the passing of centuries.
The character of the local people is the typical character of people who live near a territorial border, and history has accustomed Ladins to speak at least three different languages Also for this reason their sense of hospitality has always been so strong and so appreciated. So much as to be listed among the most satisfying characteristics of this valley, and of the its hotels, by all those who've spent here their holidays.

The origin of the language

Thanks to the founding of Sotciastel, near S.Leonardo/Pedraces, researchers can maintain that in Alta Badia inhabited centres existed already during the Bronze Age. It is not really clear who were the first inhabitants of the valley, even though they were probably of Celtic origin. With the inclusion of the Alpine regions in the Roman empire the population started to speak the Latin of the conqueror, developing in time a language, similar to Italian, French and Spanish: the Ladin. Its language, but above all by its ancient and proud agricultural-artisan culture, characterizes the Ladin population. One of its main features is respect and attention for the environment, also by adopting a specific architectural style, which harmonizes with the landscape. Symbiosis between man and nature is evident also in the hand made product, in the creation of unique and original products from what soil offers.
