Historical- geographical notes/ a few notes
on history and geography
There are no written documents about the Ladins
and their history till the end of the first millennium.
From the 11th century till 1785, the territories on the left bank of the
river was dominated by the Signoria of Bressanone. In 1785 the monastery
was secularized and the jurisdiction was left to Austrians.
After the end of the 1st World War, South Tyrol, and Val Badia, became
part of the Italian territories. The Ladin county was then divided in
three different provinces: Val Badia and Val Gardena (South Tyrol), Val
di Fassa (Trentino), and Cortina and Cadore (Bellunese).
The name
The
Alta Badia is indebted for the name to its geographical position within
the Val Badia, which in turn is named after the small town of Badia. During
the middle ages Badia was the main centre of the area, and, according
to historians, the name Badia probably derives from the word ABBAZIA (Italian
for abbey) thus idicating that, at the time, there must have been an abbey
in the area.
The name Dolomites is a tribute to the naturalist and scientist Déodat
de Dolomieu, who first discovered and identified this kind of rock, called
Dolomia. Its main characteristic is its reaction to external atmospheric
agents, such as wind, water, snow and sun. During the different seasons
of the year this rock takes on different colours and with the passing
of decades it changes shape and structure
Tourism

of the Valley in taking advantage of this opportunity, are two of the
elements that made Alta Badia on of the most popular destination. Thanks
to more and more comfortable hotel, up to date infrastructures, endless

more and more renowned amongst tourists.
Plenty of occasions and chances, whether you're looking for relax, sport
or fun.
